Best Supplements for Type 2 Diabetes
Once again, Mother Nature to our rescue!
Since most of our experts today believe that Type 2 Diabetes is a manmade disease and that it also is a diagnosis which includes inflammation, we can only heal ourselves by making changes to our lifestyles beginning at the very root of the problem with the best supplements for type 2 diabetes that there are.
In order for us to accomplish this, we must go back to the very root of what we ingest and begin there. Finding and using the best supplements for type 2 diabetes or inflammation.
To begin at the very essence of digestion we should start at the place where Mother Nature intended. Changing our diet to include the foods that were eaten in the very beginning when we didn’t have ovens, microwaves, blenders, or scientists who know how to change chemicals and their processes. Using the best supplements for type 2 diabetes that we have found and proven to work.
I have found such a list of those best supplements for type 2 diabetes and here they are, included with an explanation of what each can do for us:
The B Vitamins
Vitamin B12 will help prevent a tingling and numbness that is characteristic of diabetic nerve damage. I have some of this in my right thigh.
Folic acid or vitamin B9 helps the hardening of veins and leg pains.
B6 and B1 will protect our eyes, our nerves, and our muscles.
People with diabetes have been found lacking in the whole B vitamin family so taking a high quality B Complex is so important and will be helpful to us in many a number of ways.
Since B vitamins are what we call water soluble, if we take too much or take more than what our body needs, then what we don’t use passes with our urine. This makes it one of the safest vitamins we can take.
In return, B complex can do a whole lot of good things for us and is one of the best supplements for type 2 diabetes known to man.
The Dosage: B12(200-1,000 mcg) B9(400 mcg) B6(10-25 mg) B1(60-160 mg)= Take one capsule daily
Chromium is the diabetics dream come true. Most of us (even me) have a really hard time saying no to “sweets” and so the diet restrictions that are placed on all of us can become a real issue for most. Chromium will help with our sugar cravings and even help with our moods to stabilize them. Chromium is another one of the best supplements for type 2 diabetes control.
The Dosage: Take 200 mcg per day
There are different forms of magnesium; the first two glycinate and citrate are some of the best supplements for type 2 diabetes patients to use. However, the oxide form has been known to give some of us loose stools. I take a calcium supplement that has magnesium in it so I don’t have to worry about this extra supplement. Magnesium is known as the “muscle mineral” as it helps our cells to relax and let sugar in, which in turn reduces our insulin resistance. Magnesium also has a vital role in manufacturing insulin.
The Dosage: Take 500–600 mg per day
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid or ALA is a powerful antioxidant which helps our body’s own insulin to work better; it is a potent blood sugar controller. It will protect our fine blood vessels and the organs that these smaller vessels supply blood to. It protects our eyes and the little, fine nerve endings from the damage that blood sugar can wreak upon them. You must be cautious-careful because ALA can cause a rapid decrease in our blood sugar. If you are going to use ALA make sure your doc knows before you start because of the diabetic medicines you are already taking causes change in your blood sugar.
The Dosage: Take 200–600 mg per day
Cinnamon is a great glycemic controlling spice in the treatment for diabetes. It slows down the sugar absorption that happens in your stomach and makes better our insulin sensitivity. It will improve the signaling that insulin has on our fat cells which will make them less inflamed. This is a spice but considered one of the best supplements for type 2 diabetes used today. Cinnamon also works well for blood pressure.
When you don’t know where your cinnamon comes from, you should probably stick with the standard brands; the kind in the spice rack at your supermarket store. I purchase cinnamon bark and grind it down with my coffee grinder; although it’s about three times as potent that way. Tastes better too.
The Dosage: Take 2–6 g per day
Green Tea Extract
We have heard so much about this herb which was traditionally used in China and Japan for the health benefits it has to offer.
Green tea extract is known for protecting cells in our pancreas, increasing the release of insulin, and improving the management of our blood sugar. It is another potent antioxidant; also it has shown that it slows down aging.
The potency of green tea extract is measured in units of its flavonoid epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This is another one of the best supplements for type 2 diabetes.
The Dosage: Take 400–500 mg EGCG or the equivalent per day
This is considered an “Ayurvedic” and the “Ayurvedic” name for this herb is “Gur-Mar” which means “killer of sugar”; imagine that.
Gymnema has a substance that can decrease the sugar absorption in our intestines. It can also help to increase insulin in our bodies and even help to increase growth of healthy cells in our pancreas, which is obviously where our insulin is made.
This sounds like an amazing little herb. I went to Google to study it a little further and it is fascinating.
“Gymnema is a woody climbing shrub native to India and Africa. The leaves are used to make medicine. Gymnema has a long history of use in India’s Ayurvedic medicine. The Hindi name, gurmar, means “destroyer of sugar.”
“Today, gymnema is used for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, weight loss, and cough.” It has other uses such as for malaria, a snake bite antidote, a digestive stimulant, a laxative, an appetite suppressant, and a diuretic. WebMD is where I found this information. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-841-gymnema.aspx?activeingredientid=841&activeingredientname=gymnema
The way it is measured to determine the amount to be taken is through something called “gymnemic acid potency”. WebMD had no known amount to be taken or the manner in which it should be taken.
The Dosage: Take 400–600 mg (of 24% gymnemic acid potency) per day
Amazing to me that our physicians today would rather use “Metformin” rather than this herb which a few years ago proved to be just as effective as Metformin.
This is another herb and “Ayurvedic” which is used by the Chinese against metabolic disorders such as diabetes.
I’m wondering if the Chinese are more into using herbs and these “Ayurvedics” than they are using modern man made pharmacological medicines?
The Dosage: Take 900–2,000 mg per day, in 3–4 equal doses per day
Another powerful antioxidant. PE helps lower after meal blood sugar spikes. It reduces cardiac risk factors as well.
PE helps to produce nitric oxide; this opens up the arteries and promotes the blood flow.
The strength of PE is measured by the active ingredient, known as punicalagins.
The Dosage: Take 800 mg pomegranate extract (or 318 mg punicalagins) per day
This is known as a protein building block that diabetic patients are quite often low in.
These deficiencies have all been associated with things that are tied to our normal aging problems; those that are faced by people with diabetes. Such aging issues such as nerve damage, and failing eyesight, as well as others, etc.
The Dosage: Take 500 mg per day
It’s time to take our control back!
And so it is time to get strong and take back control of our blood sugar! It’s time to start eating the way that we were intended to eat.
During the time of our ancestors, they didn’t have boxes of sugar filled snacks and cereals sitting around to eat and if they did, they would get that low blood sugar hit half way through their mornings and be too sick to be cutting down trees to make their homes with or planting gardens to feed their families with.
If they were lucky, our ancestors went to a town once or twice a month to get supplies and maybe they had honey bees that someone knew how to handle but guaranteed, there wasn’t a whole lot of sweet stuff laying around. They definitely didn’t have soda pop. They probably sweetened things with molasses and fruit or fruit juices.
You saw how things were in Little House on the Prairie! Or maybe you didn’t but I really doubt things were much different back in those days than what was depicted in that show. It was a hard life with hard work.
But the kids were happier and people were healthier in general. There were still illnesses and diseases but there weren’t nearly as many people and diabetes was rarely heard of back then.
Today we have one in four people who have diabetes! And it is because of how we eat. At least almost every case is because of how we have been eating. At first we were taught to eat this way; we were told to eat more carbs, way more than our bodies could possibly process.
Dr. Atkins tried to stop us but most of us didn’t listen. Now we do not have a choice if we want to have a life that is worth anything. It has to stop don’t you agree?
If you can, and I know it’s expensive, but if you can it would pay dividends for you to talk to a nutritionist. If it is not possible there are those that you can follow online. Some insurance plans, such as Kaiser has diabetes programs. Medicare has many options depending on the insurance you have chosen.
If you decide to clean up your plate, filling it with only clean food like I have and then began changing my lifestyle after I found this information about herbs, spices, and supplements, then just make sure you clear it all with your doctor before you make these kinds of changes with or in your diets and lifestyles.
But it never hurts to go ahead, and explore what Mother Nature has to offer all of us. Trying to find more gentle solutions to the detrimental things that high blood sugar has been doing to destroy our systems from the inside.
As I put in their descriptions, there were several of the herbs that were very strong antioxidants and some even anti-aging supplements, but they were all listed as heavy duty anti-diabetes agents.
You should never just start taking any of them without a plan. You could put yourself smack dab in a huge blood sugar crash, which most certainly could be very dangerous.
You should make an appointment for a consult with your physician so that he can monitor your progress in a safe controlled manner if you choose to use these natural extracts, supplements, spices, and other vitamins and at the same time as he reduces your use of the diabetes pharmaceuticals.
This could have serious side effects over a shorter or longer period-of-time and your doc will need to keep close watch and control on both sides of these medications. http://www.sepalika.com/diabetes/natural-supplements-for-diabetes-type-2/
